London Borough Of Hackney Suffers ‘Serious’ Cyberattack

The city council systems for the London Borough of Hackney have been hit with a ‘serious’ cyberattack that impacts many of their services and IT systems.

Not much is known about the attack, but in a press release to the borough’s website, Mayor Philip Glanville stated that it was the Hackney Borough Council’s IT systems that had suffered the attack.

“Hackney Council has been the target of a serious cyberattack, which is affecting many of our services and IT systems.”

Council officers have been working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre, external experts and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to investigate and understand the impact of the incident,” Glanville stated in a press release.

The borough states that they are working with the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to investigate the attack and are in the early stages of the investigation.

“The NCSC is supporting the organisation and working with partners to understand the impact of this incident,” the NCSC stated in an announcement.

Due to the incident, residents may encounter difficulties accessing online services, such as payment systems and One Account.

Likely a ransomware attack

Ransomware has been a scourge on enterprises, local governments, and schools for years, but lately, there has been a substantial uptick in attacks due to the massive ransom payments paid by victims.

When organizations discover that their devices are being encrypted in a ransomware attack, they shut down their IT systems to prevent the ransomware’s spread to other devices.

While there has been no official statement about what caused the Hackney cyberattack, it is more than likely that they suffered a ransomware attack.If that is the case, then there is also a chance that unencrypted files were stolen before the hackers began encrypting the devices on the network.
