Microsoft Outlook crashes, deletes mails for some POP accounts

Some Microsoft 365 customers might experience Outlook crashes after updating to Version 2006 Build 13001.20266 and higher according to an Office support document.

Outlook will also delete three or more emails from their inboxes for accounts configured to retrieve mails from a POP (Post Office Protocol) account with Download Headers Only.

POP accounts are usually configured to download only the headers (including the sender and the subject of the e-mail) from the mail server when the user has a slow Internet connection.

Another use case would be when users want to immediately have access through a large batch of messages and not having to wait for the server to also download the email bodies and attachments.

Configuring a POP account to only download email headers will drastically reduce the time needed to download all emails from the server and greatly speeds up email browsing.

The Outlook team is currently investigating this issue and will provide more information on the bug when more specifics are discovered.

On systems where Outlook crashes because of this issue, the following event details will be written to the Windows Event Viewer Application Log:

How to prevent Outlook from crashing

Customers who need to work around this issue to prevent the Microsoft 365 email client from crashing on their systems and deleting mails can revert to a previous Office version not affected by this problem.

According to Microsoft, reverting to Version 2005 (Build 12827.20470) released on June 24 should put a stop to all the crashes.

To do this you can follow the procedure described below:

  • Type run in the Windows Search box and select the Run app.
  • Copy and paste the following line in the Run box and select OK to start the revert process:C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.12827.20470

Last month, Microsoft has also addressed another issue causing Outlook start failures for some users, displaying an error prompting the users to repair some of their inbox files.

Earlier this month, Redmond had to deal with an incident where Outlook users from all over the world were reporting instant crashes on launch, with 0xc0000005 errors being displayed in the Windows Event Viewer.

In a new support document published on Monday, Microsoft also said that users will experience one-minute Outlook startups on devices running Windows 10, version 1809 or later if User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) is toggled on.
