Letter of Consent MOM: Getting the Details Right

Intending to work in Singapore? You should know what a Letter of Consent MOM is, what it’s for, and if you are qualified to get one.

In essence, you should only concern yourself with the letter of consent MOM if you are intending to work in Singapore. That’s the first thing. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has laid out the details on key facts, eligibility, and other important information pertaining to this document so read on if this is for you.

Before diving into the facts about this Letter of Consent, you should know that there is no application fee for LOC applications.

Crucial Facts on the Letter of Consent MOM

Eligibility

As mentioned earlier, this letter of consent allows eligible Dependent’s Pass, LTVP or LTVP+ holders to work in Singapore if they ever find a job here. Specifically, you have to be any of the following:

  • A Dependent’s Pass holder who is a dependent of someone who holds an Employment Pass, EntrePass or Personalised Employment Pass (PEP).
  • An LTVP or LTVP+ holder who is married to a Singaporean or permanent resident.
  • An unmarried child (under 21 years old) of a Singaporean or permanent resident, who holds an LTVP.

Some Things to Note:

If you happen to be a dependent of an S Pass holder, it is recommended that you apply for a Work Permit, S Pass, or Employment Pass instead.

The LTVP, LTVP+ or Dependent’s Pass has to be valid for at least 3 months, and you must have an existing job offer with a Singapore employer.

Who Can Apply:

The person intending to get a Letter of Consent MoM should not be the one to apply for the Letter of Consent. Rather, the employer or appointed employment agent can apply for this. Subsequently, it is only after the employer has received the Letter of Consent can the individual begin working.

Pass Validity

The duration of the pass granted to the individual who has successfully applied for a Letter of Consent MOM depends on the following circumstances:

  • What timeline the employer indicated in the application of the Letter of Consent.
  • The expiry date of the LTVP, LTVP+ or Dependent’s Pass.

In other words, the Letter of Consent stops being valid when:

  • The LTVP, LTVP+ or Dependent’s Pass is cancelled or expires.
  • You are no longer employed by the company who applied for your Letter of Consent. In this regard, The employer still needs to cancel the Letter of Consent.

How Long Does the Application Take?

The length of application process depends on the current pass you are holding. If you are a Dependent’s Pass holder, it usually takes 3 weeks for your application to be processed. If you are an LTVP or LTVP+ holder, it takes about 1 week.

The good thing about getting the pass is that once you have it and as long as you meet the points of validity mentioned above, you can go ahead and renew your pass.

Documents Required for Letter of Consent MOM

Depending on your profession, you might be required to submit additional documents when applying for a Letter of Consent MOM. These can include healthcare professionals, lawyers, and regional representatives. Make sure you consult the Ministry of Manpower as well as your employer on these additional documents.

Some Things To Note:

If you are submitting non-English documents, you must submit the original document and an English translation. The translation of these documents can be done by a translation service provider.

Apart from these documents, MOM may ask for other documents when they review your application.
