Apple supplier Foxconn is reportedly investing $1 billion in India to expand iPhone production in the country.
Sources told Reuter that Foxconn’s investment is part of Apple’s strategy to shift production away from China as it tries to manage trade tensions between the U.S and China, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Apple is said to have strongly requested Foxconn and other suppliers to move some iPhone production out of China.

The $1 billion investment will be used to expand the Sriperumbur plant over the next three years. Sources say the iPhone XR and other iPhone models are being made at the plant. In addition, more than 6,000 jobs will be created at the plant.
The Economic Times reported in May that Apple is exploring the possibility of shifting nearly 20% of iPhone production capacity from China to India. Last year, it was reported that Apple would begin building high-end iPhones in India with Foxconn.
