Microsoft Removed Another Windows 10 2004 Safeguard Hold

Microsoft removed a Windows 10, version 2004 compatibility hold blocking devices with certain WWAN LTE modems from upgrading to the latest Windows version.

Safeguard holds (also known as compatibility holds) are added by Microsoft based on known issues and diagnostic data to delay Windows upgrades on affected devices and to protect the end-users’ smooth experience.

They are released once the known issues are resolved or the diagnostic data collected from impacted machines shows that released fixes correct the issues.

Issue fixed in October preview cumulative update

On October 1st, Microsoft addressed a known issue affecting Windows 10 customers since August where some devices with WWAN LTE modems were not able to connect to the Internet after waking from hibernation or sleep.

A fix for the issue was made available with the release of the Windows 10 2004 KB4577063 non-security preview cumulative update.

Users who cannot immediately apply the update to get the fix for this problem can mitigate it on Windows 10 2004 by toggling Airplane mode on and off.

The compatibility hold applied to prevent affected computers from upgrading to Windows 10 2004 was removed on October 15 as Microsoft said in an update made to the Windows 10 health dashboard two days later.

“Please note, if there are no other safeguards that affect your device, it can take up to 48 hours before the update to Windows 10, version 2004 is offered,” Microsoft explains.

Windows 10 2004 compatibility holds

At the moment, three compatibility holds are still preventing incompatible devices from installing the May 2020 Update:

• Errors or issues during or after updating devices with Conexant ISST audio drivers
• Errors or issues during or after updating devices with certain Conexant or Synaptics audio drivers
• Unsupported settings (compatibility issues with numerous systems and hardware configurations)

You can still force upgrade your device to Windows 10 2004 using the Media Creation Tool, the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant, or a Windows 10 2004 ISO for a clean install even if it’s impacted by one of the update blocks listed above.

To make the update process easier and work around update installation issues, Windows 10 customers can use this guided walk-through or this update problems troubleshooter.

However, Microsoft advises customers not to manually update if the May 2020 Update is blocked to avoid experiencing issues that might potentially make their Windows 10 devices unusable.
